Hit the Nail on its Head

Getting a lesson from a master sculptor
is something my grandson just loved. He listened to every word
Enno said and
followed his instructions
to the letter.
It was
Ezra's
first time that I know of to
hammer a nail into wood.

Little Ezra is four years old and loves everything
boys do at that age. Trucks are one of his favorite things.

Enno and I were at Lowe's hardware store
and found a kit for children to build a
truck out of wood. The pieces were precut and the nail holes were started.
The kit came with instructions.

Before we began to put it together we read the instructions with Ezra.
Ezra could follow the numbers and got an idea
of what we were going to do.
Enno had Ezra gather the pieces that were in
instruction number one
before he started.

I've never seen Ezra so interested in making something.
He's a talented little guy.
Now we'll get the other kits when
we go back.
We know he can make them.
His plastic hammer didn't work so he had to learn to hold
the heavy steel hammer in one hand. Since he plays golf he knows
something about holding a club.
The hardest thing
for him
to remember was placing the nail,
switching his hands to hold it with the left hand
and hammering it with the right.
Enno helped him with
every whack.

And eventually
the inevitable happened.
He hit his thumb.
Enno and I laughed which surprised Ezra,
then we all laughed together.
We told him everyone hits his thumb who hammers nails
and we knew he would.
Ezra seemed to
absorb this
and
 didn't cry.
The icing on the cake was placing
the peel and stick decals.
Exra loved that.

I don't know who had more fun,
Ezra or Enno and me.

That is a great project! Our grands love hammering, and they made a birdhouse. But they'd love a kit with decals. Must go looking for them.

How wonderful to be able to do something like this with a grandchild. I can only dream. Looks like so much fun!
